School Mobile Phone Policy

Dear Parent / Guardian,
In the past we have banned students from bringing mobile phones to school. In Term 1 the Department of Education stated that mobile phones could be valuable security devices for students when traveling to and from school. They also recognized, however, many negative features of having mobiles at school itself. Mobile phones are easy targets for thieves; they can be a source of bullying by other students; and using mobiles during school time diverts students attention from their studies. The Department called on schools to establish mobile phone registers which allowed students to bring mobile phones to school on the condition that they registered them with the school and abided by the rules schools developed in association with them.

Can I highlight that we are still discouraging students from bringing mobile phones to school. Parents can contact their children through the office number of 97287071 if they need to pass information on. There is a blue public phone in A Block that students can use to make phone external calls. If parents want students to carry a mobile phone then they need to return the attached permission note to the front office, and register their child’s phone. Can I highlight that in completing the permission slip parents and students are agreeing to abide by the schools mobile phone rules.

The rules for mobile phones at the school are

o Mobiles must be registered. (Department requirement). When students register their mobile phone they will be issued a card to carry to show teachers that their phone is registered
o Mobiles are to be turned off while on the school premises
o Mobile phone are to be kept in school bags
o Where bags are required to be left outside a room, students are to place their phones in their pocket.
o Sport / Excursions are extensions of school routine. Phones are to be turned off until students are dismissed.
o Any student who is found with an unregistered mobile will have it confiscated. This will ONLY be returned to the parent. An afternoon detention will be issued to the student.
o Students carrying registered phones, who are found using them or with them turned on, will have them confiscated and given to the Deputy Principal. These will be returned at the end of the day. Names will be recorded in a book. Repeat offenders will be issued an afternoon detention at the Deputy’s discretion

Yours faithfully
