Water is the basis of all life, every animal and plant depends on water to survive. Without water there would be no inhabitants on this planet, which makes the water the most valuable resource. By definition, water is an odourless, colourless and tasteless liquid. |
|
Water comes in many forms:
- Oceans
- Rivers
- Clouds – rain water
- Snow
- Hail
|
 |
Over two thirds of the earth's surface is covered with water. The five oceans contain about 97% of that amount. The Antarctic ice sheet contains about 90% of all fresh water on the planet. |
|
The human body needs and uses water in many ways. For example:
- Water is one of the most essential elements in our body
- Water accounts for approximately 60% of our body weight
- Water helps regulate and maintain our body temperature
- Water helps carry oxygen and other nutrients to body cells
- Water helps keep us focused and helps
keep our mental awareness at it's peak
- Water helps the respiratory system function; water helps our body absorb oxygen effectively.

Bottled water:
Is it really good for YOU?
There are two types of bottled water: spring water and mineral water.
Spring water is collected and bottled directly from the spring where it arises from the ground.
Mineral water
emerges from under the ground, then flows over
rocks before it's collected, resulting in a higher
content of various minerals. Unlike spring water,
it can't be treated except to remove dirt. Different
brands of spring and mineral waters will have
different amounts of minerals depending on their
source. |
Advantages of bottled water:
- Bottled water is convenient
- Bottled water has a lower chance of being contaminated
- Bottled water is ‘pure and natural’, meaning it doesn't contain any additional chemicals other than those found at the site.
|
|
Disadvantages of bottled water:
- Does not contain fluorine which strengthens our teeth.
- Having to constantly buy and carry it
- Environmental effects from the disposal of the plastic bottles
When travelling overseas, it is
suggested that people drink bottled water because
the local tap water may contain bugs which may
possibly result in illness. The townspeople are
used to local water but others who live elsewhere
aren't.
