HOMEWORK POLICY

This Canley Vale High School Homework Policy is based on the premise that:

Homework will be of maximum benefit to
the student if it is the shared responsibility
of the school, the teacher, the student and
the parent/guardian.
The role of the school, the teacher, the student and the parent/guardian is outlined below

The Role of the School is to:
* maintain an up-to-date school Homework Policy
*communicate this Homework Policy to all teachers, students, as well as parents/guardians
In addition, it is appropriate that each faculty within the school maintains its own up-to-date subject specific Homework Policy.

The Role of the Teacher is to:
* give homework that is relevant to the student, based on course outcomes and also student ability
* give homework that is either a preparation for in-class learning content, or an extension of in-class learning content
* give homework that is varied in time and also learning strategy
In addition, it is appropriate that the teacher monitors and maintains a record of homework given to the student, for the purpose of reporting to parents.
Overall, homework given by the teacher is of maximum benefit to the student if it is a positive experience.

The Role of the student is to:
* understand that a balanced home routine includes homework, as well as, interaction with family/friends, play and the pursuit of sport/recreation
* the quantity of homework increases from year 7 through to 12 and therefore the time devoted to homework should also increase.

Homework is of critical importance to a student’s education. It:
*prepares for or extends learning in class, resulting in self-development and then valuable self-esteem
* provides a means for assessment, indicating progress in learning, over time.

Students are encouraged to realise that positive rewards result from devoting quality time to the completion of homework.

The Role of the Parent/Guardian is to:
* encourage students to include homework in their home routine
* provide a suitable home environment where homework may take place
* be supportive of the student, through being interested and offering praise
