READING TIME

Reading Time is an important part of school routine. It is intended as a means of encouraging a positive attitude to reading by permitting students a daily session (sports day excluded) in which they can read material of their own choice. Thus students have been provided with 10 to 15 minutes after Roll Call in which they can develop their reading skills according to their own interests. The fact that the reading material is of the student’s choosing distinguishes this time from the normally prescriptive reading of the class room.

To ensure that maximum benefit is derived from this time certain rules have been adopted.

• Firstly, Reading Time should be a time of total silence within the roll call room and hence movement throughout the school should be restricted.

• Secondly, students must provide their own reading material which should not include exercise books or Maths texts. Teachers should have back-up material for those students who occasionally may have forgotten to bring along reading material.

• Finally, in order to create a reading environment during this time, members of staff are asked to participate in Reading Time by reading with their students.
